For most of us, concepts of an office setting don’t usually conjure images of sunshine, green grass and park benches – let alone something as fun as mini golf! But that is exactly what the ASID exhibit at the National Building Museum’s ‘Building the Future’ themed mini golf exhibition showcases. A collaboration between ASID, Teknion, Davis Construction and ASID member Kia Weatherspoon of Determined by Design, the Evolution of the Office explores the transformation of the traditional office space characterized by desks bound by high panel cubicle walls to the open, collaborative workspaces and the increasingly mobile workforce of today.
The lead designer on the project, Kia Weatherspoon, Allied ASID, who works from a park bench when she has the opportunity says, “The days of being tethered to a desk in a cubicle are gone. Technology has significantly changed the way we work, opening up the possibilities for us to work anywhere, anytime – and it has literally changed the landscape of the office environment. This exhibit pays tribute to this evolution in a fun way that we hope will also educate visitors about just how much transformation has occurred in the workplace over the years.”
The mini golf exhibit opens to the public on Memorial Day (May 27, 2013) and runs through Labor Day (September 2, 2013) and is designed for golfers ages 4 and up. There will also be six “Mini Golf Late Night” evenings which Mini Golf will remain open until 9 pm: June 6, June 27, July 11, July 24, August 8, and August 22.
So this is your invitation to dust off your clubs and head out to the green – and yes, you can take your Blackberry if you need to do some work along the way!
