The holiday season brings excitement and joy. And, for many of us, the season also brings anxiety in the form of long lists of things to do: gifts to buy, parties to attend and resolutions in the making. This is why every year I find it more and more important to do a gut check — to reflect on the spirit of the times, celebrate accomplishments of the past year and set realistic goals for the future.
For the interior design industry, what does that mean? My recent experience tells me spirits are higher in our industry today compared with where we were a year ago. For example, at Greenbuild, I heard from many colleagues that they have noticed attitude shifts resulting in more energy and optimism in the design world. I have seen a similar shift with many of the clients I’m working with today. As business continues to improve, workplace clients are investing in space to create environments inspire their people and contribute to a collaborative culture. I hope and believe this trend will continue in 2014.
As interior designers we know that well designed spaces result in healthy, happy and productive people, but the key to continued growth and success in our industry is to prove it. With this imperative in mind, ASID has invested in research to capture the value of design in real numbers. And, as we refine our strategic plan for the year ahead, the Society’s research, policy and education initiatives will expand our focus on promoting the return on investment designers deliver.
As we prepare to close out 2013, I ask you to do three simple things:
- Nominate outstanding designers for the ASID Awards. Please help us recognize the leaders and innovators in our industry who are pushing us forward and making a difference in the field. The deadline for nominations is Jan. 5, and the new streamlined process is easier than ever before.
- Be mindful of CEU requirements going into the New Year. As professionals, continuing education is integral to staying relevant and informed in the ever-changing world of design. The Society’s compliance deadline has been extended to Jan. 15, 2014, to accommodate ASID office holiday closures
- Make a donation to the ASID Foundation. Through its Transform grants, public education programs and pro bono service with the 1% program, the Foundation is making a significant impact on the world of design. To continue this important work and expand its initiatives, the Foundation needs your generous support.
I gave up New Year’s resolutions a long time ago, but with each turn of the calendar I set an intention. In 2014, I intend to be more patient in all aspects of life. I chose this intention because I want to try to balance the busyness of life, which brings so much pressure to do things faster. So, I intend to find ways to give the necessary time to accomplish the goals I put forward. Whatever goals and intentions you have for the New Year, I hope they include a meaningful connection to ASID. I wish you all a wonderful holiday season and a peaceful and prosperous 2014.
