Turning 40 never felt so good. It was 40 years ago this month that the American Institute of Interior Designers and the National Society of Interior Designers merged to form the American Society of Interior Designers. To celebrate this milestone throughout 2015, we will look back at some of the innovations and innovators that helped to establish the foundation of ASID, a foundation on which we continue to build today. Through ASID ICON, social media, and special programming we will highlight the ideas — and, more importantly, the people behind the ideas — driving the future of the profession.
Thanks to your hard work, we have a lot to celebrate! ASID is the unifying voice that brings all sectors and specialties of the profession together to advance and promote the impact of design. We will accentuate this unity all year through special events and programming within our 48 local chapters and our 300+ student chapters. I hope to engage with as many of you as possible at these events, including the Chapter Leadership Conference, Celebration, the Design to Lead Summit, and GO PRO.
Great things happen when we work together toward a common good, and that begins at the local level. We thank our chapters for demonstrating the impact of interior design nationwide. Every day, in big ways and small, our chapters do the heavy lifting that strengthens the broader interior design community.
In the coming weeks we will unveil a toolkit of resources available to chapters to help them celebrate 40 great years and elevate the conversation around evidence-based design and issues such as health and wellness, sustainability, and the important role interior designers play in creating resilient spaces. I look forward to meeting with our chapter presidents during the Presidents Forum next month in Phoenix, where we will share ideas, set priorities, and develop plans to move the profession forward.
Although it’s thrilling to be part of ASID during this milestone year, we remain focused on the Society’s important work ahead. I’ve learned from the example of our dedicated members and chapter leaders that the best way to celebrate success is to accomplish even more. That’s why we’ll be celebrating this year by working even harder to advance the programing, education, research, and advocacy platforms that make ASID great.
Along with our Interior Design Outlook and State of the Industry report, we’ll unveil new research that analyzes the impact of the Affordable Care Act on the practice of interior design. And, when our Transform grant winners are announced next month, the focus will be on studies that continue to validate the practice of interior design. This year’s grants will fund evidence-based research about design’s impact on physical and psychological well-being. We’ll also launch new education tools for small business owners and expand student and emerging professional programming, including career exchange events. To meet the education needs of our members, we plan to have increased CEU opportunities at more industry gatherings. And we remain committed to our social responsibility work with the ASID Foundation, the 1% program, and other partners.
It turns out 40 is not the only number we have to celebrate. Our industry generates 57,000 jobs, $6 billion in sales, and $46 billion in specified products. As impressive as these numbers are, we know the people, practice, and innovation behind them are the real story. Our members have made us strong and, as an organization, we’ve hit our stride. With 40 years of momentum behind us, I look forward to building on our accomplishments in the years ahead. For all these reasons and more, 40 never felt so good.
With warm regards,
