Success awaits, are you ready? In interviews, employee reviews or even having coffee with a trusted colleague you may be asked about your goals, ambitions or dreams. What are your goals? And if you have spent time thinking about your goals, the more important question is – How do you plan to achieve your goals?
Goal setting and strategic career development is an important planning process that you need to invest time and energy into in order to support your path to success along your career journey. Whether a soon to graduate interior design student, an emerging professional or an experienced and credentialed interior designer, there are five essential pieces of career advice that will support you on that path to success.
1. Know Yourself
A brand is a connection, a relationship and a promise. You are a brand. It is important to understand who you are and what you stand for as early in your career as possible and to stay true to that brand. A sense of self will guide you throughout your career journey and confidence in your gut instincts will help you as you contemplate key decisions along the way.
2. Keep Your Eyes and Ears Open
While you may have specific goals in mind and a series of steps planned to achieve them, always be open to the possibilities. You may be comfortable in your current position, but change can happen at any moment. By staying in tune with the industry and state of the economy you can adapt accordingly if necessary. And sometimes, when you are not looking, it is the unexpected moments and encounters that can lead you in the most interesting directions.
3. Be Ready to Sell
Your success depends upon your ability to communicate, your ability to sell yourself, your ideas, a product, a resource, etc. If it helps, think of it as promoting. Preparation and practice will help you improve these skills. The ability to promote will support your success no matter where your career journey takes you. Don’t be afraid of “selling.” Embrace it.
4. Treat People Well
Successful brands are remembered for their impact on the community and the world. That goes for you too. How you treat people matters. Remember where you came from and who helped you along the way. Be humble. Be thankful. Be generous. Be kind.
5. Constantly Reinvent
Are you happy? If your path to success is not bringing you the joy you imagined, then take the time to regroup and refocus. It is important to reevaluate your goals often. Time, experiences, and circumstances can change your priorities and your perspective. That is okay. A career journey is not a linear path. There will be twists and turns on the way to professional fulfillment.
A career is more than a job or series of jobs, it is a professional path where one experience builds upon the next as you move towards specific goals and achievements. A career in interior design can be fulfilling and rewarding. You must see the big picture and think strategically to achieve success. You have the ability to remain in control of your career and with these essential pieces of career advice you can achieve success.
